This past Thursday my study tour class had the amazing opportunity to go visit Material Connexion’s Library in Midtown, Manhattan. Material Connexion is the leading material sources for companies around the world. They specialize in special fabrics and materials that are new and cutting edge.
To access the library a company or person must have a subscription, and with it they can visit the in-person library in New York or access the online database with 8,000+ fabrics and more added every month. It was amazing to see the library in person and get to look at all of the unique materials housed there.
Fabrics in the library are classified by material rather than by use in order to get people to think outside of the box rather than only using certain materials that are specifically made for their industry. Fabrics are also rated on their sustainability with icons showing if they are compostable, biodegradable, have low toxicity, etc. This is a very valuable resource for companies looking for cutting edge materials to use, especially since the library is not biased to certain companies or manufacturers.
The librarian we talked with mentioned that the designer Zac Posen sourced the fabric for his one of a kind light up dress at Material Connexion in Midtown. The dress was the most talked about look of the 2016 Met Gala Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology. Claire Danes had the honor of wearing this led light up Cinderella dress from Zac Posen that was made possible from material he found at Material Connexion.
